Donor Funding for 2011 RCCG Scholarships, Join Us !

We are grateful for all of our Scholarship donors, including the Jules Zentner Scholarship Fund, through Trustee, David Sanchez, the Rick and Margarita Tonkinson Foundation and Joan Reitsma and the Thrivent Corporation. These donations added to the weekly Happy Dollars and other member donations will fund $11,000 in Scholarships in the 2011 Rotary year to seniors at Coral Gables Senior High School. Thanks to Randy Groh, Susan Guttmann and other Happy Dollars leaders for keeping the enthusiasm for scholarships going and to Sally for always recommending that Raffle donations be targeted for Scholarships. For more information on the Rotary Club of Coral Gables Scholarship Program, contact Terry Long, terryclong@bellsouth.net , (305) 441-8063.

Scholarships are open to seniors at Coral Gables Senior High School and applications are available in the CAP Office at the school from Gayle Payne or Barbara Inskeep. The Coral Gables Senior High School student population is 80% outside of Coral Gables and there are many students in need of help for higher education.

Special consideration is given to applicants from the Interact Club, a Rotary sponsored community service organization for high school students to give back to the community.
The Interact liason is Phil Boswell, and Teacher Advisor is Margarite DePaola.

A scholarship donation is a wonderful way to recognize a teacher, family member or
colleague in a meaningful way. All scholarships are named with the donor name along
with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, unless the donor does not wish to be recognized.

The following message comes from from Greg Shephard, Donor Relations and Scholarship Specialist of the California Community Foundation, through Trustee of the Jules Zentner Scholarship Fund and Rotarian David Sanchez:

On behalf of the California Community Foundation (CCF), I am pleased to announce the availability of the Jules Zentner Scholarship Fund for the 2011-2012 academic year. The scholarship shall be awarded to 4 student(s) who meet(s) the following eligibility criteria:
• Plan to be a full time student at a post-secondary institution
• Community service
• Demonstrate leadership, integrity and potential to achieve career goals
• Academic achievement
• Financial need should be considered when all other factors are equal

... the award amount from the 2010-2011 school year was $3000. We do not expect a
significant change in the award amounts for the 2011-2012 school year.

A Little History of Your Rotary Club
Say congratulations to Sam Burroughs who celebrates his 85th birthday next week. Sam also celebrated his 41st year in our Club this year (1997). Only Cleve Allen has been in the Club longer. For many years, Sam was our Treasurer, budget director and bookkeeper after he retired from U.S. Steel.

What was happening in our club during Sam's first year as a Rotarian? He was inducted at the end of Mayor Jerry Dressel's year as President. Most of his first year was under the leadership of Larry Larimore, who passed away a few months ago (1997). The Club grew to 115 members that year. Returning from a year as Rotary Foundation Scholar in South America was Owen Freed, later to become Club President and Founder of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

Ed. Note: Sam Burroughs, a founding member of the Fellowship of Motorcycle Rotarians, came to our meeting on his motorcycle until 1996. He was the cover story in The Rotarian Magazine that year -- in an article about the Motorcycle Fellowship.

Vol. 65 No. 30 Notes from the Podium

Presidents Time

This week Sal the cat received a summons for jury duty. The Massachusetts cat was listed by it's owner on the U.S. Census and so Sal received a jury summons. His owner requested disqualification based on limited language skills and was informed that Sal "must attend" jury selection as "jurors are not expected to speak perfect English..." Also, police in Belarus raided a traveling circus after the jugglers kept flubbing their stunts and the "exotic" animals turned out to be be a few poodles and a crocodile. The circus owner claimed that the real animals got stuck in customs.

A big "THANK YOU" to Bonnie Blair for hosting the semi-annual New Member Orientation Dinner at her home on Wednesday evening. Catering was by Lovables so the food was fantastic. As a few more newbies advance towards their permanent badge, Membership Chair Yolanda Woodbridge gave each of them the opportunity to tell us what they thought about our club, our best practices, etc. It was gratifying to hear that new Rotarians like our club because of it's friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Virtually the same sentiments were echoed by the old Rotarians who are new to our Club. The primary reason that they moved to our club is because we're so friendly, we do so many cool things and we have so much fun! Of course we do ... it's the 5-Way Test. And RI President Ray Klinginsmith, in this month's Rotarian Magazine, spoke of Rotary DNA and that the most important of Rotary's Core Values is FELLOWSHIP. Rotary builds lasting friendships between it's member because fellowship is the basis for our service.

CHANCE & DANCE UPDATE:  By now you should have received your Save the Date Card for our upcoming 65th Birthday Party Speakeast, Chance & Dance, benefiting CoralGables@HOME.  SO SAVE THE DATE.  On March 4, 2011, Rotary Club of Coral Gables turns 65 like so many millions of baby boomers.

PE Debbie Swain was presented with her double sapphire Paul Harris pin today by Foundation Chair, Rick Tonkinson.

Rick was full of praise for the example that our incoming leadership sets for all of our members by becoming multiple Paul Harris Fellows.

If you are are currently a sustaining member and would like to secure your first, second or third PHF, please contact Rick and he'll let you know what it will take to move to the next level.  Remember, PHF funds are for the Annual Programs Fund.  The money comes back to us in three years and we get to use it for the many international projects that we undertake.

COMMUNITY SERVICE MINUTE
Bob Schreiber is committed to Paws 4You.  Every Saturday he drives their van from the shelter to whichever location they are presenting the dogs that day.  And he could use some help.  He's pleading for help.  If you can drive a van and you love dogs, please volunteer to assist one Saturday a month.

The van belongs to Paws 4 You, the dogs are transported and whomever drives them stays with them, walks them and transports the remaining dogs back to the shelter at the end of the day.  It's needed.  It's rewarding.  Contact Bob for more information or to sign up at bob@hicksschreiber.com.

Randy Grohs $$$ for Scholarships Today

But he worked hard to do it as the lovely Diva is gone for two weeks. Dan Scipione gave $5 to educate us on the value of Vitamin D supplements.  It only takes a simple blood test to find out that you're missing too much sunshine sitting in front of the computer.  Get tested because it will drastically improve your immune system when  you're getting enough of this important vitamin.  Walter Alvarez invited everyone to attend the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans beginning May 21.  He and his wife Annette have many friends there.  They're making all kinds of arrangements for us to have extra fun with local Rotary Clubs. AND she's making reservations at one of the best restaurants in NOLA for a club dinner on Sunday evening.  If you've never been to an RI convention, this is the one to go to ... it's close and it will be a ton of fun.  Ed Morris had important dollars today as he explained about the Love Fund.  He urged us all to contribute something to the fund - proceed of which go to the families of fallen police officers and the two who were shot this week leave behind young children.  Help if you can.  Chris Tyson said that we make a lot of money at his expense but that's okay.  He's happy that the interviewer for the national survey company that called him yesterday found it hard to believe that he is 82!  Miki Speijers was happy because she bought some expensive gifts and promptly left them someplace and some kind soul found them and returned them to Peterbrooke where she was able to get them back.  Ted Pappas wasn't particulary happy, he just wanted to stand next to a pretty girl like Miki but he did say that he's grateful to be back from -5 degree weather in Detroit.  Margarita Tonkinson was ecstatic about last night's dinner at Bonnie Blaire's house.  The people were all wonderful and she had a great time.  And further to Dan's instructions, she wants everyone to know that your body won't absorb calcium without vitamin D.  So take your D.  Terry Long was ecstatic about her upcoming kayak trip to the Everglades this weekend.  She only hopes that she can stay in the kayak for the entire nine miles.  KEEP SMILING, HAPPINESS PAYS.

TODAY'S PROGRAM

Eduardo Chapunoff, M.D.
Chief of Cardiology, Doctors' Medical Center
Author, “How Not to Drop Dead!”

Our speaker was the author of books with compelling titles, such as “Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease and Sex”, and “Morbid Obesity – Will You Allow it to Kill You?”, and “How Not to Drop Dead! A Guide for Prevention of 201 Causes of Sudden or Rapid Death”,

Dr. Chapunoff wrote “Answering Your Question” because he found that patients were too embarrassed to ask questions.  “Morbid Obesity” explores options for those patients that are overweight by more than 100 lbs, including bariatric surgery – which he recommends to only 1% of the morbidly obese. This excess weight increases risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer. Prospective candidates for surgery first need to undergo psychological screening to help ensure the success of the surgery.

“How Not to Drop Dead!” addresses unexpected, and usually avoidable, deaths. Although devastating, death due to illness can be accepted, deaths that are unnecessary, such as medical error and many accidents, are difficult to accept.

A Little History of Your Rotary Club
Most of us know that Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905, but how many know where the second club was established in 1908? Would you believe, San Francisco? In 1909 the third club was founded across the bay in Oakland, California. Today that old club has over 350 members. It makes a very good makeup meeting if you're ever over that way. The fourth club was established in Seattle in 1909, a club which today has over 700 members. Before crossing the border into Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (this made Rotary International ) in 1910, Rotary skipped down to Los Angeles, another interesting make-up club with 500 members. When you're out that way, pop into one of these ancient Rotary Clubs for an interesting make up meeting.

Vol. 65 No. 29 Notes from the Podium

Presidents' Time
A sheep farmer in Washington State is renting out her flock of 200 sheep for $15 an hour to owners of bored sheepdogs. She gets more than 18 people a day who need to get their dogs a job.

A team of gun-weilding Canadian policemen busted a man for the smell coming from under his house. They thought it was marijuana. It was really a skunk.

If you think puce snails are bad, there's Heidi the cross-eyed opossum, now an international celebrity with 70,000 fans on Facebook and a new song on YouTube.

FEBRUARY 24 CANDIDATES FORUM Our meeting that day will be devoted to hearing more from the three men running for Mayor. Please submit your questions to Gene Witherspoon by February 17th. Plan now to attend that day. Invite your neighbors too.

A social butterfly who likes to be alone, Aquarius is detached and emotional. Say happy birthday this week to Janette Diaz on the 22nd and Joan Reitsma on the 23rd.

 Membership Minute
Ana Fournaris questioned Membership Chair Yolanda Woodbridge as to why she became a Rotarian.  Yoli's answer, "Because there are so many good looking guys in Rotary!"  And besides that she wanted to help in our community and in the world.  President Elect-Elect Walter Alvarez said actually Yoli offered him $50 to join .... (LOL) but really he became a Rotarian because he was new in town and wanted to become involved with the business community.  Ana said that she became a Rotarian  because everyone is like her family here.  They're supportive and they all abide and live by the Four-Way Test in everything they think, say and do!  Do you know anyone who would like to belong to a club like ours?  INVITE THEM TO A MEETING.

Diva Does $$ Today
Jim Hirschman was happy that he was able to return to the country with just a photocopy of his passport.  He can't find the real thing but he looked so honest they let him in anyway.  Dr. Phil was happy to announce that three of our Interactors at Coral Gables High has been nominated for Silver Knight Awards.  ALSO, they need help with their upcoming school service project, redoing the patio ... they need somebody who's handy with tools to assemble their new benches.  It's Saturday the 26th if you can help.  Bill Quesenberry is happy that it's Regatta season again.  He's been participating with the disabled sailors from around the world and is amazed at the custom designed seats they all have to make their sailing possible.  There were 34 different seats in 20-odd boats and nobody can tell.  Dick Golden spent last week in Orlando and he's going away again so he wanted to get off one good joke. So he told one about a fellow suspected of growing illegal weed and when the sheriff went to inspect he was asked not to go to a certain field.  He did, was attacked by a bull and told to "show him your badge" ... this may well have been the best joke he's ever told!  Yolanda Woodbridge was happy to see Carlos Ruiz at our club today.  He was President of the Miami Club the same year that she was President of Coral Gables.  Happiness pays so keep on smiling.

"Why Retiring in the City Isn’t Always So Beautiful"

CG@Home is a not-for-profit membership organization formed 2 years ago through a grant from former Rotarian Kirk Landon.  Today they have over 100 members. It is one of 52 “villages” nationwide, and the only one in the State of Florida.

Members benefits include transportation to the grocery store, doctors and to the airport. They receive a list of service providers to perform home services who have all been screened and checked in advance. CG@Home also provides members vacation services (plant-watering), and a help line with a daily check-in phone call. Members know that “they are not alone”. This service allows members to “age in place”, without relying on the generosity of friends and family. Most members have lived in their home for over 40 years, and many rely on fixed incomes that only cover basic costs. Only 60% of CG@Home’s costs are covered by membership fees – the rest is through fund-raising.

Helen Greer, Retired Teacher and Librarian,
CoralGables@Home member
Ms. Greer described what is certainly not uncommon among the members. She suffers from blindness, which makes her dependent on assistance. Although she has friends and family that can help her, she found that this was putting too great a burden on them. She is able to rely on CG@Home for trips to Publix, check-in calls, and social activities, and recommendations for service providers that she can trust.

CoralGables@Home is the beneficiary of our Club’s upcoming “Chance and Dance” Speakeasy birthday party on March 4, 2011. These proceeds will allow CG@Home to subsidize memberships for seniors who cannot afford the services.  For more information, go to http://www.coralgablesathome.org.

A Little History of Your Rotary Club

Frederik Mejhert, Rotary Youth Exchange student from Sweden, is our latest high school age exchange student. It's a great pleasure to host one or more of these bright young students. We've been a participant in this program for more than 30 years. Every year, around the world, approximately 7,000 students ages 15 to 19, go abroad under this program, either for the academic year or an extended holiday. With the ability to learn a language quickly and adapt to a new environment, these lucky students make enduring friendships and bridge cultural differences. The self-understanding an global outlook they gain in the process benefits them for a lifetime.

Now here's where our Roots come through. This great international program -- at least in this part of the world -- was started by one of our club members. Owen Freed, a former Rotary Foundation Scholar, President of our Club in 1968-69, District Governor in 2005-06 and now a member of the Rotary Club of Miami, is credited with founding the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. As a Coral Gables Rotarian, this is something of which you can be very proud.

Jordan Steele is another interesting connection to the Exchange Program. He and his family were so enamored of the program they hosed several Rotary Exchange Students when Jordan was still a Kiwanian! In 1982 Jordan become a Rotarian so he wouldn't be in jeopardy of not being able to host for this fantastic program.

Mystery Man from our Roots

Do you know who this is?
He was the second President of our Club

Friday, January 14, 2011

Roots by Cholly Capps

A Little History of Your Rotary Club Rotary started in Chicago with a group of four men from diverse occupations. One of the reasons Rotary grew so rapidly and well was Paul Harris' insistence on a well balanced membership which reflected the business and professional life of the community.

When the Rotary Club of Coral Gables was founded, this tradition was well established. Take a look at the classifications of our 24 founding members: Engineer-Testing, Realtor, Orthopedic Surgeon, Savings & Loan Association, Dry Cleaners, Retail Merchant, CPA, Dentists, Architect, Osteopath, Grove Owner, Manufacturers Representative Physician, Service Station Roofing, Garage & Repair Shop, Florist, Photographer, Building Contractor, Surveyor, Nursery Owner, Minister and Paints (NO ATTORNEYS!). We have been fortunate over the years to maintain a well-balanced membership. We have a Board policy based on RI's recommendation that we limit the Active members in any one broad classification to 10% of the active membership. For this reason, we presently have a "freeze" in effect on any new member in the broad classification of Law or Real Estate. There are thousands of unfilled classifications in our Club. Reach out and touch someone (propose for membership) in one of the many businesses and professions not now represented in our club.

(Ed. Note: RI changed this policy several years ago and now suggests that clubs members classifications mirror the percentage of that population in the community, e.g., if 12% of the businesses in the community are lawyers then no more than 12% of the membership should be in the legal profession).

Vol. 65 No. 28 Notes from the Podium

President's Time
It was a good week for the entrepreneurial spirit after muscular rapper 50 Cent rented himself out to shovel snow in his wealthy Connecticut neighborhood.  Fiddy charged $100 per mansion.  He charged extra if you wanted to take his picture.

It was a bad week for polygamy after a Pakistani man was publicly beaten by two of this three wives who accused him of having a secret fourth wife and planning to marry a fifth.

BRUCE'S WINGS REPORT  Thanks to more than 30 Rotarians who came out to help Bruce Kerestes sell chicken wings this past weekend at Beaux Arts.  The fellowship was awesome but the results weren't. By the time the wings were discovered the festival was over!  We had a great time but broke even.  Our food costs were $1,152.  Our total sales were $1,167 for the weekend. We tried. It was fun. But we won't be doing it again next year.

SEEKING SPONSORS for our upcoming Birthday Party, Chance & Dance, benefiting low income seniors in Coral Gables through CoralGables@HOME.   Our Club keeps 15% of whatever we make on this fund raiser so sponsorships are important.  What companies do you know who primarily serve the senior market?
Give them a sponsorship brochure.

Disciplined, practical and grudging, Capricorns are still around.  Say Happy Birthday this week to Lloyd Miller on January 19.

Lots of Rotary Anniversaries this week including Mike Freeman, 35 years, Pastor Arnie Perry, 25 years, Carol Brock, 7 years and David Sanchez, 5 years.

Witherspoon Gives Craft Talk

Frank Sexton, Vocational Service Chair, presented another Craft Talk today.  This time the featured profession was insurance.  Gene Witherspoon was the expert and specialist in Professional Liability. He's currently with Bentrust Financial, a full service financial company that writes all kinds of insurance including Long Term Care, Property & Casualty and specialty insurance for med-spas, medical malpractice and much more.  He's an independent contractor.  He's got all kinds of credentials that qualify him as a specialist in his field. So when you're in the market for insurance, be sure to contact Gene.

For whatever reason, Sexton asked the difference between an attorney and a tick ... seems the tick falls off when the host dies...guess he's taking over for Dick Golden?

Coral Gables Employee of the Month
January, 2011

Patricia  Arocla is a Manager in the Automotive Department.  Her boss, Steve Riley said that he would never be able to implement cost cutting measures and meet his budgets if it wasn't for the excellence and devotion that Patricia brings to her job.  Congratulations Patty - keep up the good work!

 Happy $$$$

Everyone seemed rather subdued today.  Maybe they're just cold.  J Guarch was all kinds of happy ... happy about being interviewed by NBC News for a case that he's working on;  happy that he and his son took a trailer to the championship game between Oregon and Auburn.  They didn't have tickets so they visited the Grand Canyon and spent the entire game in the parking lot, tailgating with fan, eating fabulous food and watching the game on TV. Bill Oates is happy to be back in Miami after spending six months as an assistant professor at Indiana University and shoveling snow.  Chris Tyson was happy that in his senior year in college his dad bought him a car.  He had one accident in his entire life...Christmas Eve 1948 while driving between Philadelphia and New Haven.  Never another.  Abe Horwitz was happy to tell us that after he did his Craft Talk he actually got a phone call from someone in the club who wanted his services.  So Craft Talks work .... volunteer for one sometime.  Keith Phillips was happy to announce that he has officially retired from Cool Breeze on January 1, 2011 and is now starting a consulting company that works for the client, now the a/c company, with no axe to grind.  Chief Skinner wanted to defend the lawyer bashing.  Although he's never played one on television, he's married to a lawyer, his daughter is a lawyer, his son-in-law is a lawyer, his brother-in-law is a lawyer, he has three cousins who are lawyers too.  AND his third grandchild was born January 5th at 10:30 a.m.  His name is Donato and they're already saving for law school.  Keep smiling, happiness pays.

Actors’ Playhouse treated us to select performances from their upcoming musical, which opens on January 19 at Actors’ Playhouse on Miracle Mile.  “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a hilarious tale about overachievers' angst, and chronicles the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The Tony Award Winning musical features music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, and was conceived by Rebecca Feldman. The cast performed “My Friend, the Dictionary,”  “I Speak Six Languages” and “The I Love You Song.”

Beaux Arts Festival - January 8 & 9, 2011

More than 25 Rotarians came out to help us raise money for our Foundation, selling Bruce's Wings at the 60th Annual Beaux Arts Festival at University of Miami, Saturday and Sunday, January 8 & 9.

We had a ton of FUN. We ATE lots of chicken wings. We hawked lots of chicken wings. But we didn't sell enough! We broke even. Still, the fellowship made up for the lack of a profit from the weekend.

Keith Phillips is now the Chief Hawker in Charge (CHIC)
Gene Witherspoon and Debbie Swain are now the Head Schmoozers (HS)
Aaron Glasser has earned the title of Master Drill Sergeant (MDS)
Bruce Kerestes will forever be A Real Man Who Frys Turkey (RMWFT)
Judy Pantoja & Mead McCabe are the Rotary Mad Men.

Sometimes it's just FUN to be outside, on a beautiful day, with a great bunch of Rotarians, meeting and greeting the neighbors. If you didn't come you really missed out.

IT WAS FUN FOR ALL CONCERNED.
