Snow's Jewelers Hosts 5th Friday

Snow's New Location - 270 Miracle Mile
President Walter's
First 5th Friday

Friday evening, August 31 marked the first fifth Friday of this Rotary year - and as is our custom - we partied hearty!

Snow's Jewelers is a fixture on Miracle Mile for more than 20 years.  Eddie Snow has just relocated to a new spot, right by the Miracle Theater.

Eddie was concerned that because it was Labor Day Weekend, attendance would be sparse.  Ha!  He should have more faith in our members and their absolute love of socializing.  More than 40 members and their guests showed up to inaugurate the new store and enjoy time with their fellow Rotarians.  And with a little help from Lovables (Carl always takes such great care of us!) we had a great time.

Generous to a fault, Eddie let us raffle a $500 gift certificate with proceeds going to our Club's Foundation.  We raised hundreds of dollars thanks in no small way to Gloria Burns' excellent raffle ticket selling skills.

Nancy Martini (Mrs. Greg) had already been doing some serious shopping.  It's difficult to resist some of the deletable baubles so beautifully displayed throughout the store.  But she was frugal and then SHE WON the $500 Gift Certificate.  Just goes to show you that you have to spend money to make money ...

Global grant provides water, sanitation for school children in Mozambique

The primary school outside Maputo, Mozambique, lacked money to update its crumbling sanitation system, built decades earlier, when the school served 700 students. It now serves 2,500 students and staff.

The plumbing was so deteriorated that school officials were forced to close the bathrooms and set up makeshift stalls in a neighboring open area -- one side for girls, the other for boys.
Not only were the bathrooms in disrepair, but the school lacked running water. There were two taps on the playground that ran for only two hours a day.

When the Rotary Club of Maputo began looking for a water project, its members approached Mozambique’s Ministry of Education for a list of schools with water and sanitation problems. Club members visited schools on the list one by one, and the choice became obvious.

“When we went to Hulene A, it was horrible,” says Amaral. “There was no water.”

The Maputo Rotarians obtained several price estimates to upgrade the sanitation system and install a water tank and began looking for an international partner to finance the US$55,100 project.

“Our club was looking for a Foundation project, as we had funds to use,” says Stein Schierenbeck, a member of the Rotary Club of Skanderborg, Denmark. “Being a club in the test district for the new global grant setup, we looked for areas of need within another test district. Contacts through our district and Rotary Denmark to District 9400 (Botswana, part of Mozambique, South Africa) led us to this project and need in Maputo.”

Once the clubs connected, they applied for and received a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. It took two months to complete the bathrooms, dig a water hole, and install a 5,000 liter tank. A ceremony was held in October 2011 to celebrate the new facilities.

Maputo’s minister of education attended the ceremony and told Amaral that the new facilities were “luxurious” compared with typical standards.
School officials are now charged with maintaining the sanitation system and water tank, which came with a one-year guarantee and were built to require little maintenance. The Rotarians involved were also careful to make sure the contractor agreed to provide regular maintenance of the sanitation system and tank.

“The children are very happy,” says Amaral. “A week ago, I went there to give some sports items to the school and several children ran out to greet me -- they recognized me as one of the people who gave them water.”

Happy Dollars

Dr. Randy as always was happy to do Happy Dollars for our scholarship program. Greg Martini for Fred Baddourwho was very happy about the CRAVE party and wanted to thank Gloria for organizing this event. Bruce Kerestis’s on August 24th. He was born in Croatia, served  in Italy and was brought to the Biltmore when it was a VA hospital to recuperate. He like the Gables so much that he returned after college. He worked in Insurance and lived in the Gables. It was the real America dream! Walter Alvarez was happy and sad because last week he took his youngest son to College. He was happy for Patrick because going to college is a great experience but he was sad because he misses him. Eddie Snow is happy to welcome Rotarians to his store. He is excited about his new location. Arnie Perry  Needs a place to store his 68 Chevy Malibu, please let him know if anyone has a place for him to store his car. Dick Golden’s joke today was about a guy in a bar who hears two ladies with British accents so he wanted to buy them a drink. He told the bar tender “to take the drinks to the British ladies.”  The ladies were not happy: they told him “we are not British, we are Welsh.” Ok, he said to the bartender, give these two “Whales a drink.”  President Walter announce that $196 dollars were made at the CRAVE event.  This money will go to the Membership Committee for Development.

 Today's Speaker

Nicole Rider, member of the Rotary Club of Miami Brickell, was our Speaker today.  The title of her talk was Life without limits. Nicole has spoken in 20 Rotary Clubs.  Since she was very young, she was involved in sports.

Nicole was driving one day with her boy friend and he fell asleep so the car turned over and she was injured. Nicole is in a wheel chair but she is involved  in sports and many other activities. She does hand cycling , Adaptive Alpine Skiing, Wheelchair Rugby and since she now lives in Florida, also goes sailing with Shake a Leg. She can walk a little but she likes to take great challenges.

Nicole would love to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games. She is learning how to play ping pong so maybe she can participate in both Sports. She has a wonderfully positive attitude and feels that you cannot let fear control you.  In 2011, she went to Hamilton, Canada to participate in the Rotary Mobility Regatta.

The Rotary Regatta is sponsored by all the club in Canada and that year it took place in Hamilton. She also told about a great fundraiser they do in Ontario that involves a big piggy bank with the Rotary logo in its nose. They collected $30,000 dollars.  Nicole left us with the thought that nothing is impossible if you are willing to try it.

"In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make."
