A Little History of Your Rotary Club Rotary started in Chicago with a group of four men from diverse occupations. One of the reasons Rotary grew so rapidly and well was Paul Harris' insistence on a well balanced membership which reflected the business and professional life of the community.
When the Rotary Club of Coral Gables was founded, this tradition was well established. Take a look at the classifications of our 24 founding members: Engineer-Testing, Realtor, Orthopedic Surgeon, Savings & Loan Association, Dry Cleaners, Retail Merchant, CPA, Dentists, Architect, Osteopath, Grove Owner, Manufacturers Representative Physician, Service Station Roofing, Garage & Repair Shop, Florist, Photographer, Building Contractor, Surveyor, Nursery Owner, Minister and Paints (NO ATTORNEYS!). We have been fortunate over the years to maintain a well-balanced membership. We have a Board policy based on RI's recommendation that we limit the Active members in any one broad classification to 10% of the active membership. For this reason, we presently have a "freeze" in effect on any new member in the broad classification of Law or Real Estate. There are thousands of unfilled classifications in our Club. Reach out and touch someone (propose for membership) in one of the many businesses and professions not now represented in our club.
(Ed. Note: RI changed this policy several years ago and now suggests that clubs members classifications mirror the percentage of that population in the community, e.g., if 12% of the businesses in the community are lawyers then no more than 12% of the membership should be in the legal profession).
