Rotary International

Rotary news in brief from around the globe
R otary clubs around the globe have many things in common, including a commitment to service. All year long, clubs are taking action to make a difference in their communities. Here’s a roundup of recent club activities worldwide:
Austria
In August, Districts 1910 and 1920 (parts of Austria; Bosnia-Herzegovina) hosted 24 students and two Rotarians from Japan who were affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Many of the students had lost their homes or had to evacuate, or lost parents or other relatives. Japanese and Austrian Rotarians covered the cost of the flights (Lufthansa provided discounted tickets), accommodations, and other expenses, and the governments of both countries offered additional financial support.

Canada
Members of the Rotary Club of Ladner, B.C., have been instrumental in a campaign to rid the province’s coast of spartina anglica, or common cordgrass, a noxious weed that was planted to control erosion but whose spread now poses a danger to wetland areas. This fall, club members put in 58 hours of work, hand-pulling 250 bags, or 5 tons, of the weed. They finished that stretch of shoreline in October.

Curaçao
The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti left thousands of people with injuries that required amputations. This October, members of the Rotary Club of Willemstad brought 10 amputees to Curaçao, where each patient was fitted with a prosthetic leg and underwent six weeks of physical therapy. The club worked with the Royal Netherlands Navy, which provided accommodations in its barracks, and with local companies Insel Air and ABC Bus Company, which covered travel expenses.

Indonesia
Through a mobile clinic, medics from a hospital in Yogyakarta have provided care to 3,636 homeless children who lost their families in the 2006 eruption of Mount Merapi. After a Group Study Exchange trip to District 3400, team leader Hugo Pike, of the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge, England, worked with his district to develop the idea. The US$20,000 Rotary Foundation Matching Grant project got underway in September 2010, but another eruption of Mount Merapi that October halted progress for several months. After the effort resumed, it expanded to 22 locations.

Pakistan
Rotarians in Karachi used a van emblazoned with messages in English and Urdu to share information about polio during Subnational Immunization Days in December. Club members also visited a school in the nearby town of Korangi, where they gave drops of vaccine to 238 children and worked with administrator Naushaba Burney to distribute fliers about the disease to students and teachers.

Philippines
Rotarians in District 3830 carried out two dozen projects after an environmental conference in November 2010. They far exceeded their goal of planting 5,000 trees, or two for every Rotarian in the district. By the end of 2010-11, they had planted 23,000 trees and expected to add another 25,000 in 2011-12.

USA
The Rotary Club of Honeoye Falls-Mendon, N.Y., created a self-guided audio tour of 12 local sites, including the Lower Mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the 1837 Mendon town hall; and a one-room schoolhouse that’s now a museum. Visitors can use their cell phones to listen to information about the stops on the tour. Instructions are posted at each location and are available in brochures and at www.hfmrotary.org/tour.html .

Zambia
The village of Mwandi is home to hundreds of AIDS orphans whose caregivers are elderly relatives. Working with the United Church of Zambia Mission Partners, the nearby Rotary Club of Livingstone is helping these families by replacing 31 deteriorating huts with more stable, traditional African mud houses, and aims to build 25 more. Rotarians from District 6000 (Iowa, USA) have participated in the project, which has benefited 64 families and 200 orphans as of November.

Vol. 66 No. 50 Notes from the Podium

President's Time
As we move closer to the end of the Rotary Year, President Debbie took the opportunity to remind us that DUES ARE DUE.  If you want to take advantage of the 20% discount you must pay on or before June 30th.

Today is National Blood Donor Day.  In honor of that occasion we had the Bloodmobile out in the parking lot today.  Some 12 or so hearty Rotarians gave their good blood for a good cause.  Thanks to all who donated!

5th Friday is June 29th
AND The Installation!!

An e-blast went out inviting you to celebrate the last 5th Friday of Debbie's year and the first 5th Friday of Walter's year at the same time.  President-Elect Walter Alvarez and his board will be installed by District Governor Ted Eldridge at Fred Baddour's house on Friday, June 29th.  The fun begins at 7 p.m.  RSVP to Terry Long if you can make it.  It's only $35 per person for drinks and food, fellowship and fun.  We can welcome in the year of Peace Through Service.

Gemini is the sign of the Twins.
But in our Club it's triplets!  Gemini natives are communicative, versatile, youthful, lively and inquisitive.  Say Happy Birthday on JUNE 15TH to Sally B., Richard DeWitt and Rodney Langer!!!

We have three Rotary Anniversaries this week too.  Abe Horowitz has been a member of our club for 13 years on June 17th.  Deena Bell-Lewellyn for five years today and Patrick Morris celebrated two years on June 7th.  Congratulations to you all and thanks for your service.

Introduction of Guests & Visitors
by Dick Bullman

Not too many visitors today, and we all know how unhappy that makes Mr. B.  None-the-less Ray Dehbozorgi introduced us to David Plympton.  Pat Morris brought the Y's intern, Alex Tran.  Frank Sexton brought Ana Laguna, his banker and friend fro Bank United.  Bill Oates introduced us for the third time to Andrea Stone, and new attorney in town.  Y'all come back again soon, ya hear?

Happy $$$$

Dr. Randy couldn't make the meeting but The Donald took care of the money just fine!  First up to proclaim happiness was Richard DeWitt who is happy that the wedding is nearly over as daughter Sasha gets married next Saturday evening.  Greg Martini was happy  that tomorrow he, his son, Donald and his son and 25 other are taking a bus to North Carolina  to go white water rafting and Boy Scout Camp in Virginia.  Bill Quesenberry was happy to have had a legitimate excuse to spend two weeks in London, Tanzania on a Safari and take a detour to Dubai.  The photos from the safari are fabulous but the photos of Dubai are even more amazing!  Yoli Woodbridge was $15 happy today, first because our Ambassadorial Scholar, Amanda Hermes is going to have a great year in Mexico, second because she needs a GSE Team to go to India with a Rotarian leader and third because she just heard from former member John Wallace who is now a Rotarian in Alabama.  Bill Martinez was happy to announce that his niece Hilary just completed her college year with straight A's.  Jim Hirschmann told us all about his back packing, white water rafting excursion that was three hours of sheer terror.  Jim Roen was not so happy because his son placed 6th in the nationals in Oak Ridge Tennessee last weekend.  Margarita Tonkinson also went white water rafting and did not take the three hour terror tour.  They went out west and saw beautiful parks and more of this beautiful country than she ever dreamed of.  She was also happy, having been on the selection committee for this year's Ambassadorial Scholar, to see Amanda here today.  Dick Bullman was happy to promote the power of prayer that he believes is responsible for his grandson's complete remission.  He urged us to pray for Dan Scipione who is undergoing chemotherapy now.  Happiness pays so keep on smiling.

Today's Program

2012-2013 Outbound Ambassardorial Scholar from our Club to Mexico - Amanda Hermes.

Amanda is the past president of Coral Gables Rotaract Club.  She came to Miami originally from Green Lake Wisconsin, a very small town of only 1,000 people. She graduated from Beloit College with a BA in Communications and a minor in Spanish and did her undergraduate studies in Quito Ecuador. She is very adventurous.

She is going to be getting a Masters in Tourism Administration at the University in Guadalajara, Mexico and is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Zapopan Lomas del Valle.

What is a Masters in Tourism?  She will learn how to plan events, get visas, open her own business and learn the money part of the travel business.  This degree is very well-rounded as she will be upon completion.

Her vision while she's in Mexico is to undertake a Service Project that gives free tours in Guadalajara, led by children.  She loves kids and loves working with them and having an opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives.  So she wants to teach them about their own city so that they can lead walking tours on their own to tourists and residents.  This will teach them history.  It will help them to develop their interpersonal skills.  The donations that they collect from the tours will go back to their schools or to a project being undertaken by Rotary called the Clean Blood Initiative.

Her five year plan includes opening her own Agency to work with schools, churches, etc., to package tours.  She hopes that it will have a non-profit component.

Amanda says that travel has changed her life and so she wants to share that with as many as possible and would like to make it available for everyone.

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM:  Brian Keeley, CEO of Baptist Hospital.

Vol. 66 No. 50 Notes from the Podium

President's Time

June is Fellowship Month in the Rotary World.  President Debbie could think of no better example of Fellowship than to have Dick Golden tell six really bad jokes with the clean punchline ... hmmmm.

DUES ARE DUE and time is running out for the 20% discount.  Pay your 2012-2013 Dues and Registration (lunch) on or before June 30th and you'll get 20% off your lunches next year.

Mark your calendar now for June 29th.  President-Elect Walter Alvarez and the 2012-2013 Officers and Board of Directors will be installed at a "Fifth Friday-Style" party at Fred & Annette Baddour's home.  Stay tuned for more details.

 The Blood Drive Cometh ...

Time to double up on your iron pills!  Our summer Blood Drive is scheduled for next Thursday.  Please sign up and plan to donate.  The Community Blood Center will be parked in the back parking lot from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., or later if there's a long line waiting.

You can come early.  You can go out during the meeting.  You can hang around after the meeting.  Pick the most convenient time to give.

For more details contact Greg Martini or RSVP to Terry Long at terryclong@bellsouth.net.

Intellectual, lively and inquisitive describes people born under the sign of Gemini.  Say Happy Birthday to Dar Airan on June 10th.

Ana Fournaris is celebrating 13 years as a Coral Gables Rotarian on June 10th too.  Congratulations Ana, you're an asset to our Club!

 Terry's is Perfect!

Terry Long celebrates 10 years of Perfect Attendance on June 5th.
And she did that in spite of going on a safari and taking a cruise last year!!   Weekly meetings aren't the only way to get Perfect Attendance.  Ask your Membership Chair for more information!

Introduction of Guests & Visitors
by Dick Bullman

Dick was very happy today because not only was attendance good, we had a lot of new faces at the meeting.  Glenn Kritzner was visiting from the Rotary Club of Miami.  Trish Hoffman brought her daughter Morgan.  President Debbie brought not only husband John but her son Adam and he bride Andrea.  Bill Oates introduced us once again to Andrea Stone a local attorney.  Chris Tyson was escorted today by his 16th Grandson John who brought his lovely girlfriend Bobbie.  Alfredo Iglesias introduced us to Chris, his friend who is a Professor of Nursing at FIU.  Sally B introduced us to Yvette Levia.  She's new to Coral Gables from California and she is a banker at SunTrust on Miracle Mile.  Also visiting us today is Coral Gables Mayor, Jim Cason.  We love having visitors, come back again soon.

Happy $$$$$

Dandy Randy returned this week to Groh scholarships as only he does!  He was ecstatic to be able to announce that this year's photo safari will leave on October 16th for Zimbabwe.  It will be be Terry Long's third trip of the seven that he's made.  Join up, sign up, call Dr. Randy for more information.  Walter Alvarez was happy for two reasons.  The first is that he just came back from Tallahassee where he attended orientation for his youngest who's going to FSU.  The second is that his installation will be held on Friday June 29th at Fred Baddour's house beginning at 7 p.m.  Be there or be square.  Tom Dixon was twice happy too.  First because he picked up Andrew at the airport after his trip to London.  The second because he took him back to the airport so he could go to a Bachelor Party in Boston.  Pat Morris is happy because Judge Leifman is being honored by us today.  He's also got a problem ... being from Boston he's a life long Knicks fan and has a reasonable hatred for the Celtics.  Game 7 of the playoffs is Saturday night.  He really wants to see the Celtics get it handed to them.  BUT it's the YMCA's annual gala and there are 420 people coming so he must be there .... choices.  Judy Pantoja, in her role as a member of the board of the UM Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that their fishing tournament is a "go".  So far 35 boats have signed up.  The proceeds from the tournament will benefit Shake-A-Leg.  She hopes to have a few Rotary boats in the flotilla too.  Frank Sexton, Chairman of the Shameless Commerce Division of Rotary was pleased to let us know that Greg Martini was featured in the Business Review for closing a $25 million real estate deal.  This on the heels of Catarna Jimenez being honored by Miami Today.  What, you might ask, do these two people have in common?  They both presented a Craft Talk at Rotary and voila!  Their lives turned around!  Happiness pays so keep on smiling.

Today's Program

Frank Sexton, Chair of the Vocational Avenue of Service for our Club brought us the program today.  He opened by explaining that Vocational Service as we in Rotary view it has three components:  1.  Celebrate the City of Coral Gables and it's service to its citizens;  2.  Celebrate the Club and how it's members serve and 3.  Honor the recipient of this Award who satisfies the criteria of Service Above Self.
County Judge Steve Leifman, whose compassion led to the creation of a national model to help mentally ill defendants, has been named the 2012 Martin Hughes Rotary Citizen of the Year.

A resident of Coral Gables for the past 12 years, Judge Leifman received the honor at the Thursday, June 7, meeting of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables.
In nominating Judge Leifman for the award, Pat Morris cited the judge’s concern for criminal defendants with mental illness. Time and again the same defendants appeared before him, having fallen through the cracks of a dysfunctional public mental health system.

In response to this, Judge Leifman began to convene stakeholders on the local and state levels to organize resources and to develop more effective, humane, and sustainable responses to people with mental illness.

In 2000, Judge Leifman created the 11th Judicial Circuit Criminal Mental Health Project, which he continues to chair today. This program, which has become nationally recognized for its innovations and effectiveness, diverts individuals with serious mental illnesses charged with less-serious offenses away from the criminal justice system and into community-based treatment and support services.

This has resulted in fewer arrests and incarcerations of people with mental illnesses, reduced crime, reduced injuries to law enforcement officers and people with mental illnesses, improved public safety and reduced burdens on taxpayers.

Due to his expertise in the areas of criminal justice and mental health, Judge Leifman has been appointed to serve in a variety of capacities on local, state and national bodies. In October 2010, for example, the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court appointed Judge Leifman to chair the Supreme Court’s Task Force on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues in the Court.

A former public defender, Judge Leifman graduated from The American University in 1981 and earned his law degree in 1986 at Florida State University. He became a judge in 1995.

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM:  Amanda Hermes, 2012-2013 Ambassadorial Scholar outbound to Mexico.
