COMMUNITY SERVICEThis Saturday is Coastal Cleanup.  It's the dirtiest community service project we do all year, an probably the most fun!  Show up at 9:00 a.m. at the main parking lot at Matheson Hammock wearing your Coral Gables Rotarian At Work t-shirt and be prepared to do just that!  The best part of the job is the lunch at Scotty's Landing afterwards.  Contact Deena Bell for more details at
deena@ba-la.com.

Next Saturday, September 24th is our monthly Bingo Games with the Vets at the VA Hospital. If you haven't attended before, please come.  We start at 1 p.m. and we're done by 3 p.m.  It's only two hours out of your life but it means the world to these guys.

And on Friday,, September 29th ... We Party!!

Introduction of Guests & Visitors

We had a dozen or so visitors from the South Miami Club today and quite a few from Miami Dadeland Pinecrest too.  Dick had a lot of trouble reading their handwriting, so he turned the mic over to Horace Feliu, President of the South Miami Club this year.
Among our visiting Rotarians from South Miami were PDG Roy Gonas, Dr. Michael Newman, Ed Fisher and more whose names we didn't get.  From Miami Dadeland Pinecrest we had President, Nancy Brown, Ron Leiberman, Mario Avalos, Steve Joseph and others.  Welcome to all of you.  Please come back again.

A few of our members brought guests today ... Yoli Woodbridge brought Judge Rene VanVoven from the Netherlands.  He's relocated to Coral Gables where his wife is Consul General to Miami.  Sally B. brought Steven  Mayer, VP Lender with Mercantil Commercebank on Alhambra.  She picked him up at the District Mixer on Monday night.  His wife is a Rotarian in the Downtown Ft. Lauderdale Club.  Gloria Burns wasn't here today but her guest, Ray Dehbozorgi, the printer, came anyway.  Welcome back to a former member of our club Rick Belz who visited us today as a guest of George Reeves.  Thanks for coming and please come back again.

Introducing
Our Newest Member

Joe Witz, sponsored by Tom Dixon, has been a Rotarian for a long time.  Now he's moved to Coral Gables and we're glad he's here.

Joe has a really long career in Real Estate, among other things!  He is President of Real Estate Consultants of Florida, Inc., a commercial  brokerage and management company he started in 1976.  He's a graduate of Wharton School with a BS in Economics then attended UF Law School for one year before he volunteered for Coast Guard Reserves.  He's on the Board of Directors of Beth Or, he's a Hunting & Fishing Rotarian, Past President of the Institute of Real Estate Management, Chairman of Local and Municipal Affairs legislative committee of the National Association of Real Estate Management.  He's a CPM since 1976.   He is currently a bachelor but the proud father of two boys one girl and four grandchildren.  Needless to say, Joe is involved, engaged and glad to be a new member of our Club.  We are certainly glad to have him!

Vocational Service Minute
Christopher Morrison
Mortgage Broker/Loan Originator
Presented by Past President Frank Sexton

Chris has a long career in many fields.  After 10 years in hotel management and 21 years as a commercial real estate broker, he became a mortgage broker.  Now he's become a loan originator which, since new regulations have gone into force, is a rapidly shrinking field of competition.  He was one of 43,000.  Now he's one of 16,000.  Things are looking up.  As a Direct Lender he controls the entire lending process in house.  It moves through rapidly so people can qualify for the cheap mortgage rates while we have them.  Now's the time to refinance.

Chris also has his own cottage industry.  He's often told what a great voice he has and so has taken acting and voice lessons and now records demos for commercial and narrative work in his home studio.  He's building a client base so that he can pay off his own mortgage quicker.

So if you need a mortgage or if you need a voice-over.  Call Chris Morrison.  Just don't ask him about Stanford!

Sophia Loren, Upton Sinclair and our own George Corrigan celebrate their respective birthdays on September 20th.  That's the cusp of Virgo and Libra.  They are all reliable, practical, worriers who are charming and self indulgent.  Happy Birthday to them all!

Congratulations to The Diva!  Susan Guttmann celebrates 12 years in Rotary this week. Thanks Susan for all your service to our Club.

               Happy $$$$

Dick Golden stood in for the good Dr. Groh and didn't even have a chance to tell a joke today.  But he did find a lot of happy Rotarians including The Diva who is ecstatic to be celebrating her 12th Anniversary in Rotary. She said when we see her we see Baptist Health and when Baptist sees her they see Rotary.  Margarita Tonkinson was happy to have attended the first meeting of the Scholarship Committee last night.  She says the "pot of dough" is a little short right now but there's still a long time until scholarships are given out so everyone needs to remember to be happy.  Also, if anyone is so inclined they could make a provision in their will for a legacy sponsorship for Scholarships to our Club.  PE Walter Alvarez was happy to announce that he's been visiting with a lot of the Committees and really enjoying their meetings - and the wine!  He urged everyone to get involved in a committee.  Jim Hirschmann said he hasn't been back since his terrific presentation several weeks ago because he's had a rhythm  disturbance problem with his heart.  But after electro-shock treatment to the heart he's better than ever!  Horace Feliu, President of the South Miami Club was really happy to be with us today.  Chris Morrison was happy to announce that the Rotary Classic Golf brochures just went out to 40 organizations that support the VA Hospital.  We're expecting a lot of golfers!  Felix Pardo was happy to announce that his niece is coming home tonight, after her horrible accident.  He also wanted to beat Golden to a joke so he told one about some fellow who couldn't sleep because of rat soccer and wouldn't sleep because it was the playoffs???!  Luis Boue only came up for Happy Dollars because Fred Baddour was too shy to say how nice it is to have two other clubs with us today.  THE Donald Trombly was raffling off his pirate booty to the highest bidder, so BUY HIS BOOTY.  Past District Governor and South Miami Rotarian Roy Gonas asked us to join with his club to collect winter clothing for the  people in Vermont who lost everything in the floods.   They are partnering with the Rotary Club of Brattleboro, Vermont to help the poor and the seniors in this ravaged area.  Fred Baddour finally came up by himself and repeated the message delivered on his behalf by Luis B.  Lots of happiness buys lots of scholarship money.  Keep on smiling.

Today's Program

Todd Dayton, District Governor 2011-2012

Governor Todd is a member of the Coral Springs/Parkland Rotary Club and a member of lots of other Rotary groups.  Yes, today was a Rotary Program.  But not in the usual sense.  Todd didn't come to lecture to us.  We've evolved way beyond lectures.  He came to remind us that, "It's a wonderful life because you're in it, so feel the heartbeat of Rotary."

He said he can't change the world in a year as District Governor but it is his task to let us know how the Rotary world is changing.   Who do we motivate?  Let's look at people and systems.  Club membership drives projects, creates passions and potential.  We have to adapt to Generation Acceleration, we need to catch up with the communication technology in order to attract the New Generations into Rotary.  New Generations (Youth) is the lifeblood of Rotary.  We need to develop them.  Rotary has learned that they need to collaborate or become extinct. The Future Vision Plan is here.  It's starting now.  And it's changing the way that Rotary Clubs and Districts work in the future.
There were lots of other messages today but he wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the District Conference is November 17 to 20 in Bonita Springs (check the District Website for details).  It won't be an intense Rotary weekend.  It will be fun.  Bring your pirate booty and cash it in for chips.  Be prepared to have a great weekend full of fun and fellowship.
And he took just a few minutes to say "thanks" to all the people and all the clubs that have helped him and made him welcome.  Especially to Tom Pratt, Chair of the District Conference and Pirate Extraordinaire!
