Saturday At Matheson - Coastal Cleanup
for Community Service
Members of the Club Cleanup Crew included, Carol Alexander, Walter Alvarez, Sally B, Phil Boswell, Bruce Kerestes, Rodney Langer, Deena Bell & Charlie Llewellyn, Frank Sexton, Elizabeth Silverman, John Wallace and Denna's friends Lorraine Sheldon, Shannon and Bruce and a few others from out of town for the event. The Rotaractors were duly represented by President Maxwell and Bram along with two lovely ladies from UM and FIU Rotaract too. We had one surprise volunteer from District who shall remain nameless!
The biggest challenge of the day was fighting our way through the hundreds of Wolf Spider webs that are strung all over the mangroves. This is their mating season and they were everywhere.
Never pass up an opportunity to whistle and play while you work. The Rotaractors were actually trying to get a ball out of a tree ... things just went downhill from there.
And while the shoreline was not as trashed as it is in some years, there was not shortage of things .... we found shoes (or parts of), plastic bags, bottles, straws, garbage can lids, styrofoam bouys, kids toys, adult toys,
any number of bottle tops and pieces of broken plastic.
When everyone was good and dirty we left our trash bags, made up the collection lists and gathered at Scotty's Landing for a post-cleanup lunch. All in all it was a productive day of fellowship for All Concerned.
Our Club participates in Coastal Cleanup every year. In fact, we are a sponsor of the event. SO you can be sure that you will have another opportunity to participate in this fun community service event.

We have so much fun rummaging through the mangroves to see who finds the most interesting garbage....this year Charlie found a 3' long Rastafarian head of hair, complete with rubber bands...and it was REAL! ugh. Where was the rest of him? Stay tuned until next year to find out!
Elizabeth...where is the treasure that you found? I thought you were bringing it to the club meeting???
