New Generations

Pat Morris
Coral Gables & Gulliver Prep Interact Clubs

Our Club has two really terrific Interact Clubs under our wings right now.  Coral Gables High School Interact has been our active and thriving club almost since Coral Gables High School was founded in 1950.  Our Club was chartered in 1946, and in the 1950's, `60's and `70's Interact was known on school campuses as Wheel Club (Rotary Wheel, get it?) and was mentored by RCCG.

I was at school the day that they had "open enrollment" for Interact and had the opportunity to speak for a few minutes to more than 100 young people who were interested in learning more about this vibrant service club, the largest at Gables High right now.  The Club's Faculty Advisor is Margarite DePaolo. She's done an outstanding job for the past 10 years.

Gulliver Prep Interact Club is new to our Club this year.  Previously they were being sponsored by the Miami Sundown Rotary Club which closed it's doors on June 30th.  Gulliver asked us to be their sponsor Club and we happily accepted.  This is a large (100 young people) and active Club that is deeply involved in the community and in service events.  Their Faculty Advisor is our own Hank Langston.

Gulliver's most recent service project is volunteering at Community Partnership for the Homeless' Soup Kitchen.  This was just one of their projects in September.  A couple of them also joined us for Coastal Cleanup last month as well.  They're already making plans for the annual fundraiser, a fashion show, this is an ongoing and HUGE success.  We'll get to know this group a lot better as the year goes on.

It's a real pleasure having the opportunity to work with these young people.  They are the future of Rotary but more than that, they're the future leaders of our society.  Get involved with the New Generations Committee and you'll see for yourself what great kids they all are.
