Vol. 66 No. 14 Notes from the Podium

President's Time

We are so very busy that Debbie spent most of her time telling us about all of the things that we have committed to do.  The list is very long.  You can find it on our Home Page or on our Facebook Page ... or further along in this blog.

Thanks go to Terry Long for securing a grant from Sam's Club for $1,000 for our VA Bingo Program.   Our monthly bingo games with the guys down at the VA nursing home is one of our longest running community service projects and one that we love.  This money will go to purchase the coupon books that the guys win when they win at bingo.  Lots of coupons.  Thanks Terry!  By the way - VA Bingo is next Saturday, October 15th from 1 until 3p.m.  Sign up and go.  You'll love it!

GABLES BIKE DAY

is Sunday, October 23rd.  It's an all day festival event that features everything by bicycle.  We are the lead service organization for that day - a sponsor of the event for that reason. We need 100 volunteers.  Sign up now or Debbie will twist your arm!  Two hour shifts all day Sunday.  You can bring your family and they can play while they wait for you to finish your shift.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

October 31st is the International Kids Fund Halloween Party.  We bring the holiday to the children at IKF.  We wear the costumes, we bring the treats and help them to decorate pumpkins.  Judy Pantoja is coordinating this project.  See her for more details.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Plan now to spend the morning (10 until 1) at Community Partnership for the Homeless serving Thanksgiving Dinner to those in need.  This project has become a tradition for our club.  We've been doing it for the past ten years.  We buy the food, they cook it and we serve it.  It's one of our most popular projects.  Bring your family to help too.  It's a great experience for your kids.

This is a District Fundraiser.  All of the proceeds go to the The Rotary Foundation's Annual Program Fund.  Then it comes back to us in three years as matching funds for grants for some of the many projects our club undertakes.  It's not expensive.  You get credit to your Foundation account.  You could win!    Buy your balls from Rolf.

Diplomatic, urbane, charming and peaceable are the best characteristics of those born under the sign of Libra.  Say HAPPY BIRTHDAY tomorrow to Bill Forshee who fits that description perfectly!

Viresh Dayal is celebrating four years as a Rotarian this week.  Thank you for all your service to Rotary.

Introductions of
Guests &Visitors

Phil Mortensen was visiting us today from the Rotary Club of Nampa Idaho.  Nampa is 20 miles west of Boise.  He's happy to be visiting us and brought his Club flag.  Owen Freed, Past District Governor, past Rotary Scholar, past President of our Club and current member of the Miami Club was also visiting us today.  Fred Baddour brought two guests today, Adrian Battle and Rene Van Vooten.  Greg Martini introduced Deena Bell's guest today in Deena's absence, Lorraine Sheldon.  Thanks for coming and please come back again.  We're a fun bunch!

Vocational Service Minute

Vocational Service Chair, Frank Sexton introduced us to a lady who really needs no introduction, Elizabeth "Lovables" Silverman.  Her fame preceeds her.  She is not only one of the best caterers in South Florida, she is OURS.  She's famous for her office lunches.  She's providing the Breakfast Bags for our golf tournament.  She prepares the food for our 5th Fridays.  Everything is always fresh because she loves to shop!  And she loves to squeeze the melons!!
If you have plans to entertain and want someone who will take the work out of it for you, call Lovables Catering.  Elizabeth will do you right!

 Happy $$$$

Sensitive to the needs of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Randy worked hard today to make the money Groh.  He was happy to see Fred's guest, Adrian Battle, an old and dear friend.  Richard DeWitt is pleased to be leaving for Slovakia, Bulgaria and Slovenia tomorrow with wife Luba.  Miki Spiejers is happy that her artist-husband Tom Weinkle has been awarded a full month's Artist in Residence position for the National Park Service.  Jim Roen is busting his buttons because his son Brent received his senior class ring last night from Belen Jesuit Academy.  Dick Golden wanted to let us know that he would be gone for several weeks.  He also wanted us to laugh a little at his joke about the fellow who was on a diet but the hardest part of the instructions he got from his doctor was the skipping .... Owen Freed was happy to be visiting our Club today since this is where his Rotary Roots started. He was President here in 1968.  Terry Long was happy to see Barbara Stein here today and since Barbara is an Honorary Member of our Club she gave her the Club pin and her membership card for 2011-2012.  Sally B was happy that Eddie Snow hosted our 5th Friday last week - it was a blast. Debbie Swain was happy for all the Rotarians who have supported the Citizens for South Florida fundraiser being held at Fairchild on Saturday.  Eddie Snow was happy to have had the opportunity to host the Club last Friday night.  He said he enjoyed having us.  Happiness pays so keep on smiling!

Winner! 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical
South Florida Regional Premiere

Featuring David Arisco as Edna Turnblad

Hairspray is Broadway’s hottest musical-comedy phenomenon with so much heart and soul that it also inspired a major motion picture. A joyous tribute to the ‘60’s, this intelligent and hilarious musical has the best Broadway score in recent years. It’s 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire, to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her new found power to vanquish the reigning teen queen, win the affections of her heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network – all without denting her ‘do!

“If life were everything it should be, it would be more like HAIRSPRAY. It’s Irresistible!” New York Times
He brought a few of the stars of the show with him today ... Joleen Mojica who plays Tracy Turnblatt, Ronald Duncan, who's Seaweed and Mat Regis who is the lead hearthrob.  And of course, David Arisco plays the mother!  He had to go to the gym to lose weight to play a fat woman.  He also had to shave.  So if you think this photo isn't David, you're wrong.

The show opens next week.  It's huge, it's fun and you won't want to miss it.

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM:  October is Vocational Service Month, but exactly what IS Vocational Service?  Find out next week.
