Five fantastic non-profit
organizations come together to provide children of several of Miami Dade County
kids' programs a wonderful day of fun in the sun !
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame and Canes 4 Life together with the Rotary Club of
Coral Gables, Shake-A-Leg Miami and The Youth Fishing
Foundation hosted a Bay Day for kids from CHARLEE Homes, Overtown Youth
Center, the Leadership Learning Center at John Bosco, The NFL
Yet Center and the Northwest Boys & Girls Club. There were also six
Veterans joining us. The event was held at the Shake-A-Leg Miami facility in Coconut Grove on Saturday,
May 19th from 10AM to 4pm. Bay Day is a family event where invited
participants rotate through enrichment zones including sailing,
kayaking, bay cruise, and swimming at eco island courtesy of Shake-A-Leg
Miami. For kids that don't swim, there was a scavenger/trivia
hunt on the Eco Islands which lie just off the coast of the Shake-A-Leg Miami
facility in beautiful Biscayne Bay. Land activities included art, face
painting and an educational experience at a touch tank with live sea life
provided by The Youth Fishing Foundation.
Kids also received
a surprise visit from Sebastian, the IBIS. The Heisman Trophy was on
display all day and available for photo ops with UM Alumni
Athletes who were present throughout the day. Several well known University of Miami alums
participated in activities with the kids. Kids went home with a
fishing rod courtesy of The Youth Fishing Foundation and in promotion of The UM
Sports Hall Of Fame's Fishing Tournament which will be held at the Post Card
Inn in Islamorada June 29th - 30th benefitting Shake-A-Leg Miami and Habitat
for Humanity.
This event, co- sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, was an amazing community event that brought together several wonderful non-profit organizations and
provided an unforgettable experience to each child that
participated; a day of making memories in the sun!!!
